Editor’s note: This is the second and final installment of a two part interview with controversial writer and environmental activist Derrick Jensen (see part one here). Author Carl Donohue spoke with Derrick (www.derrickjensen.org) in November 2007, exploring various concepts related to the subject matter of Jensen’s three books, A Language Older Than Words, Listening to the Land, and Thought to Exist in the Wild: Awakening to the Nightmare of Zoos. As he had hoped, Carl found Derrick’s responses to be insightful and thought provoking. Part two begins midway through Carl and Derrick’s conversation, as they discussed the exploitation of animals in zoos.

When it comes to attracting birds into camera range, nothing is more effective than water. Only a limited number of species come to feeders to eat seed, fruit and nectar, but all birds come to water to bath and drink. Using water for bird photography can be especially powerful if you happen to live in the drier climates of the west or near a good migrant trap. (migrant traps are locations where birds congregate during migration to rest and feed).

When it comes to shooting with fill flash, photographers all face the problem of how to mount a flash to their camera set ups. Attaching the flash directly to the camera causes several problems: 1) verticals are difficult to shoot this way and 2) most of the time, the subject will have “red” or “steel” eyes, due to the flash being too close to the focal plane of the camera. To avoid this effect, the flash needs to be higher and farther away from the camera itself. I tried several weak products from a variety of manufacturers before purchasing Wimberley Flash brackets to solve this problem. I should have done it much earlier.

Many photographers enter into contracts with clients where the photographer agrees to perform photography services in exchange for payment. But what happens when you don’t get paid after you’ve rendered the services?
