Polar Bear on the ice

Postby Natureview on Mon Oct 12, 2009 8:16 am

Congratulations! This is the Image of the Week selection for the Wildlife Gallery, week ending 16th October, 2009!

This Polar Bear was walking on the ice close to the ship. I always like to see them wandering around on the fast pack ice.

Great pose, great setting & whites in white!
Everything seems to work here perfectly.
Cheers!

Great shot, Arjen! Absolutely no color-cast, which is hard to achieve in this circumstances.

Best regards,

Bas

Although the opportunities in Svalbard, etc may not be as prevalent this is the unique environment you do not get elsewhere.

Well done.

Best,

The bear looks nice and sharp with plenty of detail in the fur and texture in the ice. There are some bright white spots in the open water area which catch the eye. Not sure what they are (hot pixels?), but they can be easily fixed if you are going to be making a print of this.

Thanks all for the comments so far.

@Chas: this picture is indeed taken on Spitsbergen. The density of bears might be lower as in Churchill, but I definitely prefer these surroundings.

@Phil: Too late this picture is hanging in large format (80 x 53cm) on my wall already :-) I think the white spots are snow kicked up by the bear.

Well done. Yes, and the Upraised Paw adds so much, with the black claws, A beauty.... :)

What a spectacular scene for this bear. The raised paw adds greatly. A big print of this must be awesome.
