Pricing Q for use of image

Postby Eve Turek on Fri Oct 30, 2009 9:38 am

I've searched the forum and have a Q: My husband & I own a gallery and frame shop. Our local bank is buying matted artwork from us, including my photos, and we are framing it all. So far, so good. They also want to use one of my phtographs, huge, on canvas, for their signature lobby artwork. I would be providing a digital file, and they will be printing that canvas piece themselves. They are asking what my fee would be to use it in a non-exclusive way. I will still retain all rights to the image and can resell it in the gallery. I've looked at lots of online software programs but none cover something like this. It isn't for publication. It isn't strictly for an ad either. I will get photo credit. There is great value to me and our gallery in having the image so prominent; plus, we are getting compensated for all the other photographs and artwork and for the framing; all the artwork will include my signature as fine art pieces. Any advice??? Anyone done anything similar?

I can't offer much help in terms of what to charge, but know that E.J. had a large print or mural done in a restaurant so he might be able to chime in. Do you know the projected size of the canvas? That might help to determine the cost. Also do you have a fee that you would sell a canvas of that image in that size for? My guess would be that if you are supplying the file and they are doing the printing, that you would want to charge less than that.

Make sure you state the terms of the use of the file clearly in whatever agreement you come to. If you are providing the file only for reproduction of one piece, to be printed once, on canvas, at a certain size, be sure to state so.

You may want to get a copy of Fotoquote, especially the new version. http://www.cradocfotosoftware.com/ It's easy to find standard pricing for a variety of things! I typed in "mural," and got a few options. One looks to be a match - "display.lobby/hotel mural." The estimated prices are based on how long it is displayed.
